You've maintained, inspected, and repaired UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters in operational environments where maintenance quality was literally a matter of life and death. The FAA recognizes this experience — and it's your direct path to an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate that unlocks the entire civilian aviation maintenance industry.

Your Direct Credential Path: FAA A&P

The FAA A&P certificate is the civilian aviation maintenance credential. Without it, you can't legally sign off on aircraft maintenance. With it, you can work on any civilian aircraft.

Good news for 15T veterans: Your military experience can qualify you for the A&P written, oral, and practical tests without completing an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS).

FAR Part 65.77 — Military Experience Pathway:

  • 18 months of military experience on airframes (Airframe certificate)
  • 18 months on powerplants (Powerplant certificate)
  • Or 30 months covering both (combined A&P)

Most 15T veterans with 2+ years of service qualify. Apply at your local FSDO (Flight Standards District Office) with your military training records and maintenance logs.

Add IA Inspection Authorization Later

After 3 years of A&P work experience, you can apply for an Inspection Authorization (IA) — which allows you to perform annual inspections and approve major repairs. IA mechanics earn $100K–$130K+ and are in high demand at smaller operators.

Translate your 15T evaluations into an aviation maintenance resume

→

The Resume Translation

Military Language

“Served as UH-60 Crew Chief; performed phase maintenance, 40-hour and 200-hour inspections, and corrosion control on assigned aircraft”

Civilian Translation

“Performed scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on rotary-wing aircraft including phased maintenance inspections, component replacement, and corrosion prevention programs — maintaining 100% airworthiness compliance”

Your 90-Day Action Plan

  1. Gather your maintenance records and training documentation before out-processing — these are required for the FSDO application and can be hard to get after separation
  2. Contact your local FSDO and schedule an appointment to review your qualification for A&P testing
  3. Purchase A&P study materials — ASA or Gleim study guides are the standard; $50–$80
  4. Register on Aviation.com and AviationJobs.com — post your profile with your maintenance experience
  5. Apply to Sikorsky or DynCorp SkillBridge programs 6 months before ETS
  6. Run your evaluations through Debriefed — translate DA Form language and Army aviation terminology into FAA and civilian MRO industry language

The FAA A&P certificate is one of the most direct military-to-civilian credential paths that exists. 15T veterans qualify faster than almost anyone else. Get your records together and start the FSDO application this week.
